Pilates is a great method of exercise for post abdominal surgery, but what about preparing for surgery? Will a strong core pre-op make the recovery process less painful or faster? Well that’s the challenge I pose to myself before my surgery in about a month.

As a trainer, I know first hand how Pilates can transform the way your body looks and feels by developing core strength, lean musculature, and a strong cardiovascular system. But practicing Pilates takes a regular commitment in order to achieve greater physical power, flexibility, and symmetry. And I must confess that due to symptoms of my medical condition, I haven’t done Pilates routinely. But now I’m ready to put Pilates (and myself) to the test and find out if it will ease my post-op recovery.

THE CHALLENGE: Over the next 30 days I’ll be doing a combination of cardio and Pilates – 30 minutes each – daily. The Pilates routine goes back to basics. Even if you’re at the advanced level of Pilates, every once in a while it’s a good idea to slow your pace and focus on these classic essentials:

  • Hundreds
  • Roll-up
  • Single Leg Circles
  • Rolling Like A Ball
  • Abdominal Series
  • Spine Stretch Forward
  • Saw
  • Neck Roll
  • Side Kick Series
  • Single Leg Teaser
  • Seal

I’ll keep you posted on my progress in 2 weeks! And finally, no good challenge can start without before pics, so here are mine…
